This might sound strange but people still do not know how to tweet and what to tweet about. Personally, I don’t think Twitter is for everybody, it can actually do more harm than good if not used effectively.
Many people on twitter are obsessed with getting more followers. Whether you are new to Twitter or have been tweeting before, here are some tips to using Twitter effectively.
Grab Your Name
If you are serious about using Twitter, you need to think about your twitter name. Always go for your real name or business name but if it’s taken you can add your interest, function or a character- follow me @kerrykimone. Whatever you choose, select a name that fits you or your business because ultimately that is how you will be known on Twitter.
Make sure your profile has a real head shot or your business logo. The image should be clear and readable so that people can recognise you or the logo of your business.
Let people know who you are and what you are about. A good written bio can help you get more followers. Many people will read your bio before deciding to follow you. Also, include keywords in your bio so that your Twitter profile can show up in search.
Follow people who share similar interests as you. Follow at least five persons each day and hopefully they will follow back. This is the easiest way to get followers. Please note that Twitter monitors for aggressive following and unfollowing, for example, you can’t follow 10,000 people if only 100 people follow you. Every user can follow 2000 people total. Once you’ve followed 2000 users, there are limits to the number of additional users you can follow: this limit is different for every user and is based on your ratio of followers to following. Tweet well and often
Potential followers will check your recent tweets to see if you are worth following. You should have at least one tweet a day. I can’t stress this enough, don’t tweet mundane activities! Nobody needs to know you are ‘washing your face’. Share interesting, informative or provocative stories, add links and photos. Make your tweets fun! If you see something worth sharing in your stream, click the Retweet button. Retweeting helps you make friends on Twitter
Add hashtags to your tweets, this is a good way to connect with people with similar interests. Even though I encourage the use of hashtags, too many #hashtags in a #single #tweet can be #annoying. Using over two hashtags per tweet is not proper twitter etiquette. Also, use hashtags to tap into Twitter conversations. See what is trending and join the conversation.
Talk to people, not at them’. See what your audience is talking about and engage in a conversation with them. Being a part of conversations will improve your exposure and increase the chances of being followed. Anyone can start a chat on Twitter by using the hashtag.Twitter chats are a great way of connecting with your relevant followers.
Share your Twitter content on other networks such as a your Facebook, Linkedin, blog or website. Make it easy for your audience to find your Twitter profile.
If you want to get more Twitter followers, do it the right way. Complete your profile, follow people, tweet often, utilise hashtags and put up ‘follow me on Twitter’ links across the web and offline. Follow these tips and check where you stand with Klout or Kred. The higher your score is, the more influential and relevant you are.
